OMORI Free Download is a horror game developed and published by OMOCAT LLC. It was released on 25 Oct 2020. Omori is a wonderfully written and directed role-playing game in the vein of a Mother-esque experience with fun, colorful characters, plus a darker, more serious narrative. While this game is best described as a psychological horror game, it certainly doesn’t seem to clash with the setting and environment, and the overall narrative weaves together the brightest and happiest aspects of the game with the bare minimum. OMORI Gameplay: It introduces mechanisms new enough not to make it ridiculously obsolete. In keeping with the ideas of the game, the main combat mechanic is that of emotions. It’s a Fire Emblem-like triangle, with Happy beating Angry, Angry beating Sad, and Sad beating Happy. But, on top of that, these emotions are not fixed things. The emotions of everyone in your party can be changed during the battle, as can your opponents. This opens up a unique box of strategies on how and when to put emotions into battle to get good shots.

Emotions also have the unique effect of having additional effects besides a triangle effect, such as Sad which causes you to deplete your MP (or “Juice”) when you are hit by an opponent. There are even more emotions beyond base 3, but you get it all. This combat system is pretty good. It’s attractive and keeps you on your toes as enemies react in different ways to keep you cool. Menu and item management systems are a bit lacking, but they don’t actively inhibit the gaming experience.

OMORI Walkthrough: You can usually get away with just taking down your enemies using attacks and a few special moves, but the emotions mostly play out as intended during boss fights. Think of emotions as a Pokémon starter trio then use emotions to exploit weaknesses. It’s fun, but the random encounters are too short to use them because you and the enemy are quite fragile.

The art and music are fantastic. The writing is great, with lots of jokes and some pretty hard-to-swallow moments. If you liked the obstacles in Earthbound or the ants in Mother 3, there are a lot of little jokes about sections of the game that are closed for progression. The looming darkness of the game is present, but not to the point where you cannot enjoy the fun and cute moments. It will seem to remind you that this is not a happy game, but generally in short, manageable segments.
