It plays in a similar way to previous titles in the series; the scroll button and combos are still in use, and despite the 3D graphics, the characters are limited to a 2D path. The MK4 introduces a limited weapon system, allowing each character to draw a special weapon using a combination of set buttons. Once equipped, the weapons are used mainly by punch buttons.
This includes swinging, clubbing, or even throwing weapons. Weapons can also be thrown intentionally, in a similar way to objects in the arena, such as cut heads and stones. If an opponent’s weapon is dropped, the other character is able to pick it up and use it. MK4 has added a “Maximum Damage” ceiling to the game’s combo system, automatically breaking the combos if they damage a certain amount of a player and thus preventing endless combos (although this ceiling can be removed with a code).
Unlike the Mortal Kombat Trilogy, which contained several finishing moves of various types, Mortal Kombat 4 has only two Fatalities per character and two Stage Fatalities that can only be done in certain arenas and involve the winning character throwing his opponent into a part of the arena where they are killed. Unlike the first three games, this game does not include boss characters that cannot be played, except for Goro in the home versions.
