Minecraft stands out not only for the way it inspires me creatively but also for its unique aesthetic. Look, I know the pictures look outdated and a little silly, but few games have such cute and charming images. Could you take a texture from Gears of War, Halo, or Uncharted, put it on a shirt, and ask players to identify it? I doubt it. When I look at my house and see that every piece of furniture and wall is exactly where I wanted it, I love it even more or change it to my liking. From the moment my house was built, my mission was clear: tunnel into the ground to get everything I needed to build a fortress in my little part of the world. Creating articles in Minecraft is one of the most important things you do. The problem, however, is that the necessary information is not found in Minecraft. The first time I walked through some trees and gathered wood, I had no idea what to do with it. Fortunately, like many Minecraft players, I had a mentor who guided me to various online forums, communities, and wikis.

I have pages that I keep coming back to all the time, I often get out of the game myself when I can’t remember exactly how to create an article. For many, this is just a rite of passage, but it is generally an obtuse way to handle the craft. I would love for recipes to be somehow integrated into the game, even if I have to find them all over the world. There is not much sense of accomplishment in reading a wiki and only following the text instructions. Even after finding a good resource, it takes a lot of effort to learn everything. The sheer number of recipes and articles you work on is intimidating and time-consuming to learn. Many games have poor documentation, but Minecraft has none, and what is available is not easy to digest. But Minecraft is still more than fun to guarantee the learning curve. Addiction, however, really begins as you create objects and gain control over your surroundings. Suddenly, at night, when the monsters appear and take over the illuminated parts of the world, it is not as scary.

I mean, it’s always a little scary, but having a sword in your hand – even a simple wooden one – instills a sense of power. Like a caveman cutting his first spear or lighting his first fire, building simple tools and torches in Minecraft makes me feel safer as if I were the master of my destiny because I have the power to create the objects that make me can save.
