Although it is a shooter, the game is primarily cooperative and team-oriented and thus eschews some “realism” conventions common in other FPS games. Colorful outlines of teammates are visible through the walls to help players stick together and coordinate their movements. If a Survivor’s health is depleted, they are incapacitated and can only be helped by another Survivor, after which they continue to play with less health. If they are incapacitated twice without healing, the third incapacity will kill them.

In Campaign mode, if a Survivor dies, they will eventually reappear in a closet or small room but will have to be freed by another Survivor to join the team. The AI will not open the “respawn lockers”, so if all of the human player’s survivors are incapacitated, the level will reset. Survivors can share first aid kits and pain relievers and heal each other. Left 4 Dead has friendly fire, increasing the need for caution and coordination with other survivors. Through a quick menu, survivors can communicate and organize with voice commands and calls. More than 1,000 unique lines have been recorded for each survivor. Further communication of the player’s actions is transmitted by lights; Weapon-mounted flashlights and muzzle flashes help players determine when their teammates are firing, performing melee attacks, reloading, or moving.

All the original campaigns are divided into five levels, connected by shelters; checkpoints where players can heal, rearm and revive characters who have died. Some levels are interrupted by “crescendo events”, which introduce a new obstacle before the survivors can move on. In the final chapter of each campaign, players must defend a position against an infected attack until help arrives. The four campaigns are: “No Mercy”, a city that culminates in a hospitable skyscraper; “Death Toll”, a small town and field; “Dead Air”, a bombed city and an airport; and “Blood Harvest,” a forestry and agricultural setting.
