Something that I have always liked about the Guilty Gear series was its depth. Not just the depth itself, but how he achieved such depth with a relatively limited list of moves. My main game is Tekken 7, so I’m used to seeing 100+ moves on any character, but on Guilty Gear, maybe it’s a maximum of 20. Strive is no different and gives the game a deceptively simple look. That is until you actually start it up and get a random slap online. Actually being able to enter moves correctly and remember them is not a problem here given that there aren’t many of them per character, but using them all effectively and utilizing the most advanced machinery in the game is where the challenge lies.
However, Strive feels a bit different in the sense that it doesn’t seem to be as reliant on the combo as previous Guilty Gear titles. There are still some nasty combos here, but the moves, overall, seemed to do more damage overall. In fact, there are some characters that can literally clap half your HP in two moves. However, I did like this general approach a bit. It makes the fight less dependent on these massive combo ropes and balances it out a bit so you’re not sitting around waiting to fall off someone’s combo.
The story mode is essentially a long movie. Actually, there is no gameplay, it’s just a full story animated in the game engine. It was exactly like that in the last game, but I can’t deny that I was a bit disappointed. It would have been great to see the game tackle something like the Granblue Versus story mode. Strive has pretty much what you would expect when it comes to the game modes. There is a short tutorial, a mission mode that explains the mechanics of the game in-depth, and a practice mode with a mountain of options and things to do. switch. I spent a lot of time in mission mode trying to adjust to the way I played Strive and it was really helpful before diving into the actual game. Offline modes consist of the usual 2 players, vs CPU, survival, and arcade. Arcade mode has a few brief interactions between the characters at the beginning and the end, but nothing that really makes it more than a series of fights together.
By far he is probably the most handsome 2D fighter I have ever played. The bar was already high with Granblue Fantasy Versus, but they raised even more in Strive. Everything from the models, backgrounds, animation, and effects, everything looks fantastic and maintains the same rough Guilty Gear look as he does it. It also works well. I played at 1440p with maximized settings on my GTX 1070 Ti and had no issues with dropped frames, stuttering, crashes, or anything like that. The only issue I had was that the game would keep launching at 1080p before switching to 1440p when loading my settings. Otherwise, it is very polite. I’ve seen some people complain about the music, but I don’t see a problem. It’s a bit different from previous Guilty Gear games, of course, but it’s definitely not bad and it still fits the overall theme: fast and strong.
There are currently 15 characters and they cover all kinds of playstyles. I played arcade mode for each one and generally had a good time with most of them. Of course, Faust remains my favorite by far (as he was in the last game), but I also liked Potemkin, Ramlethal, Anji, and Zato. The two new characters are Nagoriyuki and Giovanna. The former is designed for those super heavy damage attacks and has that neat blood mechanic that lets you drain your own HP to do more damage. He’s slow, but I liked his punchy style of play in general. Giovanna, on the other hand, was not at all amused. She just feels like an ordinary close-range fighter. Like, they added all that “fox spirit” trick to his character, but he’s barely used because almost all of his moves are just meleed things.
Offline versus works great, but it is also the first Guilty Gear to support the online restoration of network code at launch. I really wanted to give it a try before posting this review, but couldn’t because the servers have been down for several days. However, if the beta is something to go through, then that will be a good thing.
