This means that, ideally, you should think not only about the cards that you will draw next but also about the benefits that they will get from the color of your weapon/shield. What is especially crazy about equipment is that you can lift it from a tile and use it without wasting energy. It is completely viable to change a weapon in the middle of a fight. This means that you could have a turn in which you plan what your enemies are doing, what books are coming, what color they are, what equipment is on the ground, and how you can get to it. The mechanical ambition of the game is amazing.

However, with this ambition comes a strange warning, because the solution of the game to avoid interactions that break the game or creative problem solving is to greatly restrict certain mechanics to the point of being overweight linear. The bread and butter movement option is Initiative, an energy book that moves you 1 square. This book always starts in your hand at the beginning of your turn. However, this card is also removed if it is not played first. Somehow, this decision shifts the movement from a potentially rewarding and complex system to a linear mechanism to punish the player safely. For example, take Intercept. Some enemies will intercept you, preventing you from moving.

You can kill them, but since you attacked you can’t play Initiative. You start with a Slam on your deck, which moves you on an enemy’s tile and pushes them, but if you’re intercepted, you can’t use it, because it counts as movement. The game then adds a crossbow enemy to shoot in your direction. There is no reward for clever movement here because you can’t move and there’s no real creative solution to get around this, except to kill/hit the enemy to break the interception.
